Envisioned from the Ministry of Culture's vision and its role in advancing cultural sectors in various arts and areas, and given the importance of Arabic calligraphy, its great connection to Arabic language, and the history and beauty embodied in its details, that showcase a creative cultural inventory reflecting the richness of the Arabic culture; 2021 will be a distinguished year in which the Ministry is celebrating a symbol of the Kingdom’s identity. The Ministry of Culture will be working during the Year of Arabic Calligraphy 2021 towards enhancing the presence of Arabic Calligraphy inall public and private sectors, and between individuals. This is in addition to its presence in national and international forums and conferences, to promote the informative and intellectual role undertaken by the Ministry during this year. The ministry is aiming to open new horizons in the utilization of Arabic Calligraphy by transforming it from an area of information and knowledge to symbol that represents the Saudi identity, the renweing art, and cultural heritage.

Arabic calligraphy is derived from the Nabataean calligraphy, which belongs to the Aramaic calligraphy. Researches have shown that Arabic calligraphy started between 169 BC - 106 AD.

YOAC was established in 2020 and aims to engage public & private sectors, whether institutes or individuals, by submitting their proposals and engaging them into the execution phase. The YOAC initiative ends by the end of 2021.
