The Literary Association Launches 38 Events to Celebrate World Short Story Day

The Professional Literary Association has announced a comprehensive cultural program to celebrate World Short Story Day, observed annually on February 14. The program includes 38 literary and critical events that will be held across several cities and governorates in the Kingdom, with the participation of a distinguished group of writers, critics, and enthusiasts of the short story genre. The program will address a range of themes that highlight the richness of this narrative form, including the philosophy of brevity and depth of meaning in short fiction, the aesthetics of the moment and compressed time, narrative techniques and character construction, the voice of the story, language and dialogue, and metaphor, as well as the role of storytelling in shaping social awareness and the impact of literary imagination on the human experience. The events will also shed light on Saudi short stories through critical readings and contemporary narrative experiences, discussions on intergenerational storytelling, and explorations of flash fiction. In addition, the program will feature specialized practical workshops on short story writing, narrative techniques, dialogue crafting, and the transition from text to the act of reading. The events will take place in several cities and governorates, including Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Al-Ahsa, Al-Jouf, Hail, Jazan, Najran, Makkah, Madinah, Abha, Buraidah, Taif, Tabuk, Yanbu, Bisha, and Rijal Almaa, reflecting the program’s broad geographical reach and cultural diversity. This program comes as part of the Professional Literary Association’s efforts to activate the Saudi literary scene, strengthen the presence of the short story genre, engage with global cultural occasions, and provide platforms for dialogue and criticism that contribute to the development of the literary landscape and support writers and those interested in narrative arts.
