The Saudi Coffee Symphony
Inspiring Tastes and Tunes

In every house in the Kingdom, the making of the Saudi coffee is intertwined with various steps that gives the coffee its rich and glorious taste. Starting with roasting and stirring the beans over the mehmas, grinding the coffee using the najr in musical melodies known as tathleethah, tarbee'ah, or takhmeesah, and all the way to pouring the coffee into the fenjan. Whenever the Saudi coffee is being made, these familiar melodies come chasing after the ears, like a common chant known to every Saudi house, announcing that it's time to gather around coffee. Such tunes are associated in memory with the Saudi generosity and hospitality.

But these tunes are not limited to the process of making coffee; rather, their existence is a source of continuous inspiration. Therefore, as part of the Saudi Coffee Year 2022 initiative, the Ministry of Culture launched the "Saudi Coffee Symphony" competition to celebrate this ancient heritage and enhance its cultural roots and their significance. Furthermore, the competition seeks to enhance the spirit of creativity by encouraging music makers to creatively combine musical instruments with the sounds of making coffee.
