The Ministry of Culture is launching a national competition WeavInk with the aim of involving creative students of fashion design to compete to present the best fashion designs. The competition will be organized as a unique opportunity on an international spectrum, and it will be a unique opportunity for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to rediscover the heritage of fashion and give the opportunity for 200 designers join the bootcamp in the first phase, given that it is deeply rooted in Saudi culture and heritage, and the creative mission of the events of the Year of Arabic Calligraphy (YOAC) 2021 has been achieved. Certificates of Completion from the Fashion Commission will be issued to all participants.

Raising awareness of Arabic calligraphy’s aesthetic value through fashion design.

Sharing experiences and developing a local fashion design community that spans globally.

Connecting fashion students in the Kingdom to the e-platform of the Ministry of Culture and creating a database for those interested in the fashion field.

First Phase

In the first phase of the program, 200 selected designers will undergo an intensive virtual bootcamp which will cover fashion styles and concept development with the aim of submitting the Digital Portfolio.

Second Phase

In the second phase, the top 10 contestants will be selected. They will have the opportunity to develop their designs with the mentorship of the advisory committee through virtual sessions in order to produce fashion pieces, from clothing and accessories, and submit them to the jury. The jury will select the best designers based on the quality of work and the process used in developing the designed pieces. The jury committee is composed of local and international designers and calligraphers who will be approved by the Ministry of Culture based on their experience and knowledge in the fashion industry.

General Regulations

  • That [participation] does not conflict with the provisions and principles of Islamic Sharia and public morals.
  • [Participation] does not conflict with any local or international rights, regulations, rules or laws, or encourage in any way the violation of such rights, regulations or laws.
  • The submission of the [Participation] by the Participant does not mean that it is registered as intellectual property.
  • Ministry of Culture may publish whatever information it deems appropriate about the participants, and everything related to the [Competition] on its website and social media accounts.
  • Ministry of Culture has the right to exclude any participant without giving any reasons, and without entailing any obligations or compensation of any kind on the Ministry of Culture. The Ministry of Culture also has the right not to award the prize to the main winner and to choose another participant as the winner, when the reasons why the participant is not entitled to win are fulfilled by referring to the terms and conditions of the competition.
  • Ministry of Culture has the right to suspend, delay, cancel or change the terms and conditions at any time and without prior notice, and the participant must review any updates to these terms and conditions. The Ministry of Culture will not announce the changes it makes to these terms and conditions.
  • [Participant] confirms that he/she is not an agent, judge or advisor to the competition at the time the application is submitted.
  • The application form must be completed on the Ministry of Culture’s website. The application form can be filled out in both Arabic and English. In case there are many applications submitted by participants, only the most recent application submitted will be considered.

Participation Terms

  • The participant must be Saudi. Whether a Saudi national in the Kingdom or a Saudi national outside the Kingdom. Also, residents within the Kingdom.
  • The participant must be over 18 years old.
  • To be a fashion student in the second academic year at least in an educational institution.
  • [Participation] is restricted to individuals and not to groups or institutions.
  • The participant is committed to complete credibility in all phases of the competition and is committed to attend and complete all phases of the competition.
  • [Participation] must be unique and creative, duplicate [Participation] will not be accepted.
  • The files must not bear the name of the participant, in order to ensure the fairness of the arbitration, as violating [participations] will be cancelled.
  • The participant must submit the [participation] and all the required documents via the website, and upload the files in the required formats according to the guideline during registration on the website, noting that [participation] and the required documents that were not submitted through the website will not be accepted or considered.
  • Upload a file of previous works, photos of previous designs, artistic portfolios that have been worked on, or participation in fashion exhibitions.

Fashion Criteria

  • Previous experience in the fashion industry or participation in fashion design competitions and the like.

Legal Responsibility

  • Terms and conditions are subject to the laws and regulations applicable in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the competent judicial authorities in Riyadh city shall consider any dispute arising out of the [participation].
  • In case of a dispute over the intellectual property of the [participation] or any other dispute, the participant releases the Ministry of Culture from any responsibilities for any material or moral damages resulting from this, and the participant alone bears full responsibility for this violation and the breach issued by her/him.
  • Ministry of Culture is not responsible for any material losses or damages resulting from [participation] in the website.
  • Ministry of Culture is not responsible for all legal measures taken against the participant in case of a violation of any of the laws and regulations before the official authorities.
  • The participant acknowledges that all the data entered is correct, and if it turns out otherwise, the participant bears full responsibility, and when any of the data and information entered is changed, she/he undertakes to inform the competent authorities in the Ministry of Culture.
  • Ministry of Culture does not bear any responsibility if false or inaccurate information is delivered as a result of human errors or technical malfunctions such as loss, delay or deletion of data transmission, or a malfunction in the telephone line, computer, network, or computer accessories.
  • The Participant warrants that the [Participation/Idea] is original, and that no one owns the intellectual property rights of the [Participation/Idea].
  • The [participation/idea] submitted to the Ministry of Culture will become the property of the Ministry of Culture, and it will be entitled to register its intellectual property.
  • In case there is more than one similar [participation/idea] from two different participants, and there is no proof of ownership of the [participation/idea] on both parties, the [participation/idea] will be cancelled. Unless one of the parties submits a formal proof of ownership of the [participation/idea].
  • Ministry of Culture will keep the detailed files attached to the [Participation/Idea] by the participant.
  • The participant acknowledges his consent that the Ministry of Culture or any third party authorized by the Ministry to publish the [participation/idea] on the website or in any other media, whether known now or emerging in the future, including websites, mobile, television, radio, etc. and the participant also agrees to use them in shooting advertising campaigns and in all available advertising media.
  • The [Participation/Idea], in all its details, as well as any other information submitted by the participant, must be personal and entrusted to her/him specifically, and the participant acknowledges that all information provided by her/him to the Ministry of Culture does not violate intellectual property rights, private rights, privacy or other rights of any third party, and the Ministry of Culture reserves the right to refuse [the participation/idea] or exclude it and return to the participant any damage caused to the Ministry of Culture.
  • The Ministry of Culture does not guarantee any intellectual property rights claimed by the participant, and the Ministry of Culture does not bear any legal responsibility regarding the intellectual property of the materials uploaded on the website, which may constitute a violation of registered property rights.

    What is the WeavInk fashion competition program?

    The Ministry of Culture launches the WeavInk fashion design competition, with the aim of involving creative students of fashion design to compete to present the best designs inspired by the aesthetics of Arabic Calligraphy.

    Who is the targeted group?
