The Ministry of Culture is launching a national competition WeavInk with the aim of involving creative students of fashion design to compete to present the best fashion designs. The competition will be organized as a unique opportunity on an international spectrum, and it will be a unique opportunity for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to rediscover the heritage of fashion and give the opportunity for 200 designers join the bootcamp in the first phase, given that it is deeply rooted in Saudi culture and heritage, and the creative mission of the events of the Year of Arabic Calligraphy (YOAC) 2021 has been achieved. Certificates of Completion from the Fashion Commission will be issued to all participants.
In the first phase of the program, 200 selected designers will undergo an intensive virtual bootcamp which will cover fashion styles and concept development with the aim of submitting the Digital Portfolio.
In the second phase, the top 10 contestants will be selected. They will have the opportunity to develop their designs with the mentorship of the advisory committee through virtual sessions in order to produce fashion pieces, from clothing and accessories, and submit them to the jury. The jury will select the best designers based on the quality of work and the process used in developing the designed pieces. The jury committee is composed of local and international designers and calligraphers who will be approved by the Ministry of Culture based on their experience and knowledge in the fashion industry.
What is the WeavInk fashion competition program?
The Ministry of Culture launches the WeavInk fashion design competition, with the aim of involving creative students of fashion design to compete to present the best designs inspired by the aesthetics of Arabic Calligraphy.
Who is the targeted group?
All fashion students, men and women, undergraduates (excluding first year) and postgraduates studying Fashion, Saudis and residents in the Kingdom and Saudi fashion students studying abroad.
What are the stages of the competition?
10 selected designers out of a total of 200 participants will be selected for the opportunity to join a virtual bootcamp. This training bootcamp is a virtual educational program that covers fashion styles, concept development, and the final development of fashion pieces and accessories by world-class experts in the field of fashion. The 10 participants will also receive a sum of money to develop their garments. Local and international fashion experts will also evaluate the 10 works and choose the three winners.
What are the objectives of the competition?
- Raising awareness of the beauty of Arabic calligraphy and its various uses.
- Highlighting the aesthetics of Arabic calligraphy through the arts of fashion.
- Community participation and the creation of cultural environments in the field of fashion.
- Connecting fashion students in the Kingdom to the electronic platform of the Ministry of Culture and creating a special database for those interested in fashion.
Are there any age restrictions?
You must be 18 or over to apply.
Is the program only open to women?
No, the program is open to men and women who meet the required Terms & Conditions.
Do I have to pay to participate in the competition?
No, the competition with all its phases is free of charge.
What nationalities are eligible to apply?
The program is open to all nationals inside & outside of Saudi Arabia as well as residents of Saudi Arabia.
Do I need to submit the application in Arabic?
The application can be submitted in Arabic or English.
Can I apply individually or with a team?
Applications must be submitted by individuals only.
How can I participate?
