About Arabic Calligraphy

Arabic calligraphy is a profound and timeless art form that embodies our heritage and rich history, distinguished by its aesthetics, structure, and elegant forms. It holds great cultural value and stands as one of the finest expressions of cultural creativity within Arab-Islamic civilization. In alignment with the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Global Center for Arabic Calligraphy Initiative, this competition aims to honor this enduring legacy, promote its importance, and highlight the beauty of Arabic calligraphy as a unique artistic discipline. The initiative also seeks to inspire calligraphers to explore their creative potential and produce works that preserve the identity of Arabic calligraphy and the heritage of Islamic art.

Competition Stages


Initial Screening

The designated committee will begin by screening all submitted entries.

Technical Evaluation and Judging

Screened works will be reviewed and evaluated by a panel of expert judges specialized in Arabic calligraphy.

Finalist Announcement

The names of the finalists selected for the in-person competition round will be officially announced.

On-site Competition

Finalists will compete live in a public setting, where they will be required to produce original calligraphy works in real time before the jury and audience.

Competition Registration

Duration: 13 days, Registration period: August 24 – September 5
Participants must register through the official website by filling in their personal information (name, gender, age, country/city, etc.).

Terms and Conditions:

  • The competition is open to anyone capable of creating an original work of Arabic calligraphy.
  • Participants must adhere to all guidelines and criteria outlined in the competition booklet.
  • Each participant may submit entries in only one of the three available calligraphy styles.
  • If more entries are submitted than allowed, all submissions will be disqualified.
  • Participants must complete and submit the official participation form available on the website.
  • All entries must follow the recognized traditions and principles of Arabic calligraphy heritage.
  • Only tools specified in the technical description may be used.
  • Submitted artworks must be scanned in high resolution (no less than 300 dpi).
 Any submissions that are tilted, unclear, or poorly presented in a way that obstructs evaluation will be rejected.

Submissions That Will Be Disqualified

Works that do not comply with the previously mentioned technical requirements.

Works that do not adhere to the assigned texts and calligraphy styles of the competition.

Works containing clear spelling or linguistic errors.

Works that do not meet the minimum required artistic competence for competition.

Any work lacking originality, or that has been partially or fully copied, repeated, incomplete, or does not meet the approved participation requirements.

Artistic Evaluation Criteria

Adherence to the recognized technical rules of each calligraphy style.

Aesthetic composition of the text, including balance of mass and white space.

Artistic harmony between the calligraphy tools used (pen, paper, and ink).

Technical accuracy and integrity of the letterforms according to calligraphy principles.

Visual consistency and flow within the composition.

Nature of the Competition

  • How can I participate?
    You can participate by applying through the registration link and uploading all the required information.

    How are submissions evaluated?
    Submissions are assessed based on specific evaluation criteria determined by a specialized panel, according to the quality of the submitted works.

    Where will the competition take place?
    The competition will be held in person at the Riyadh International Book Fair, in the pavilion dedicated to the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Global Center for Arabic Calligraphy Initiative.

    Do participants need to pay for registration or travel expenses?
    No. The initiative is fully sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, and participants do not need to pay any fees. The competition organizers will cover all travel and accommodation expenses for shortlisted participants during the competition phase.

    Do I need to be a professional in one of the three calligraphy styles?
    The competition is open to all calligraphers and enthusiasts, and participants do not need to be professionals in Arabic calligraphy.

    I didn’t receive the activation email after registration. What should I do?
    There might be a short delay between registration and receiving the activation email. If the issue persists, please contact the competition team through the official email or the Ministry of Culture’s unified support number.

    Does the competition require full-time availability?
    The competition will be held during official working hours. If you are selected to participate, you must be available at least one day before and one day after the competition dates.

    What is the last date to submit my application?
    The final deadline for submission is September 5, 2025.

  • Regarding logistics, for testing and nomination, candidates will be contacted only through the platform.

    Ensure that the competition venue is prepared in a manner that suits the competitive atmosphere.

    If nominated after registration and submission of work, the contestant will be contacted for coordination and arrangements. If not nominated, no contact will be made with the applicant.

    All registration requests and submissions must be made exclusively through the registration platform on the competition’s official website.

    It is important to focus on attaching the required documents during registration as specified on the platform to avoid modifications that may affect participation.

    Once the submission file is uploaded, the participation is considered received, and no additional confirmation is required.

    No prior training sessions will be provided to participants by the center.

  • Participants must submit all required styles (fonts/scripts) according to each category and adhere to the required texts.

    All submitted work must be created solely by the participant without assistance from any other party.

    Submitted works must be created specifically for the competition and must not have been entered into any previous competitions.

    Participants must not sign or write their names on the submitted works.

    Works must be submitted within the specified deadline.

    Submissions must not conflict with the provisions and principles of Islamic Sharia, public decency, or the prevailing cultural values in the Kingdom.

    Any changes to the competition will be announced on the official website or through the Ministry of Culture's social media channels.

    If needed, the Ministry of Culture reserves the right to request additional information or documents to support the submission or verify its authenticity.

    The Ministry of Culture reserves the right to change or cancel any of the terms and conditions at any time without prior notice. Therefore, participants are expected to regularly review any updates to the terms and conditions, as the Ministry will announce such updates accordingly.

    The Ministry reserves the exclusive right to publish and announce all matters related to the competition, including the names of applicants and any other information deemed appropriate, across various media platforms, social media, and the internet.

    At any stage of the competition, the Ministry may, at its sole discretion and without explanation, disqualify any participant from the competition without incurring any obligations or liability for compensation of any kind.

    In the event of similar submissions from different individuals, and if neither party can provide proof of ownership, the submission will be disqualified—unless one party can officially prove ownership.

    The participant pledges full honesty throughout all stages of the competition and commits to attending and completing all phases of the competition.

    The participant acknowledges that the Ministry of Culture reserves the right not to award the prize to the main winner and to select another participant as the winner if there are valid reasons that justify the original participant’s ineligibility, as determined by the competition’s terms and conditions.

    The participant agrees to maintain confidentiality and not to remove, damage, misuse, publish, or disclose any documents or confidential information related to the competition or the Ministry of Culture. This obligation remains in effect throughout the participation period and even after it ends.

    Submitting a participation does not constitute its registration as intellectual property.

    The Ministry of Culture has the right to publish any information it deems appropriate about the participants and any matter related to the competition on its website and social media accounts. All decisions made are final. The Ministry of Culture and participating entities reserve the right to suspend, delay, cancel, or modify the terms and conditions at any time without prior notice.

    The Ministry of Culture may update the terms and conditions from time to time. Therefore, participants must review these terms regularly, as the Ministry will not announce changes to the terms and conditions.

    The Ministry will not be responsible for paying any fees related to the development of the participant’s submission.

  • These terms and conditions are governed by the laws and regulations of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Any dispute arising from participation in the competition shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the competent judicial authorities in the city of Riyadh.

    Participants must not publish their submitted works on social media before the competition period ends and winners are officially announced.

    The Ministry of Culture bears no responsibility for incorrect or inaccurate information resulting from human error or technical malfunctions, such as data loss, delays in data transmission, deletion, phone line failure, computer or network malfunction, or issues with computer accessories.

    The Ministry of Culture and participating entities are not responsible for any damage to or loss of submitted works.

    The Ministry of Culture is not liable for any legal actions resulting from violations of laws committed by the participant before official authorities.

    Participants must not infringe on any international or local rights, laws, or regulations, nor promote or encourage violations in any way.

    The Ministry of Culture is not liable for any legal actions taken against a participant if they violate any rules or regulations before official authorities.

    By using the official website, the participant acknowledges the Ministry of Culture's right to retain all submitted information and files, and to archive them as it deems appropriate.

    The Ministry of Culture and the participating entities are not liable for any material loss or damage resulting from participation in the competition.

    The Ministry of Culture is not responsible for any legal consequences arising from violations of laws by the participant before the relevant authorities.

    These terms and conditions are subject to the laws and regulations in force in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Any dispute arising from participation shall fall under the jurisdiction of the competent courts in Riyadh.

  • The participant affirms the originality of the submitted work and confirms that no other party holds intellectual property rights to the created artwork.

    Ownership of the submitted works shall be transferred to the Ministry of Culture, while crediting the participant by name.

    Participants have no right to reclaim or request the return of their submitted works after they have been entered into the competition.

    The participant agrees that the Ministry of Culture or any participating entity may record promotional campaigns and use the winning entries and the winners’ names across all available media channels.

    By participating, the participant grants the Ministry of Culture—and any third party authorized by the Ministry—a non-exclusive, irrevocable license to copy, publish, broadcast, or otherwise use the submission. This includes the right to edit, modify, rearrange, crop, translate, and reformat the work for any purpose deemed relevant to the competition. This may include publication and use on the competition website, other websites, mobile devices, television, radio, and social media platforms.

    The submission, in all its details and accompanying information, must be personally created and owned by the participant. The participant affirms that all information provided to the Ministry of Culture does not violate any third-party intellectual property rights, personal rights, or privacy. The Ministry of Culture reserves the right to reject or disqualify a submission and seek compensation from the participant for any damage incurred.

    In the event of a dispute over the intellectual property of a submission or any related conflict, the participant releases the Ministry of Culture from any liability for material or moral damages. The participant shall bear full responsibility for any such violations and resulting claims.
