About the competition

Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. In response to the challenges that the world faced recently, Formula 1® announced an initiative to celebrate everyone who contributed to the defense lines of the Covid-19 pandemic and to promote unity and cultural diversity under the name of We Race as One.

As part of the initiative and based on the Ministry of Culture's keenness to discover and support local talent, Race Through Art Competition is launched in cooperation with the Ministry of Sports, which invites amateur and professional artists to participate in designing artistic drawings that reflect the unique culture of the Kingdom, where the winning artwork will be executed in the run-off area surroundings in FORMULA 1 ® SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX 2021.

Specifications

Artwork Resolutions

- The artist's artwork interacts with the concepts of movement and speed in design and reflects the unique and rich culture of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the depth of its history and traditions of hospitality that highlight the Kingdom's role as a host to the Formula 1® race.

Required Resolutions

  • - The minimum submitted works will be 29.7 x 42 cm and larger.
  • - The artwork must be exported in digital format or the paper drawing will be digitized.
  • - - Any paperwork or artworks that is smaller than the specified sizes will not be accepted.

The winning artwork will be executed on the tracks surrounding the ring (Run-Off Area) by a dedicated Formula 1® team in compliance with sporting regulations and safety requirements and using certified techniques and coatings. The specialist team strives to carry out the work in the same colors chosen by the artist, noting the following:

Modifications may be necessary to comply with best racing practices and safety requirements.

The winning artwork in run-off area must consist of simple geometric lines. It is necessary to avoid complex words, complex representational and geometric shapes.

The winning artwork in the run-off area will be the work of the 1st place winner and will be applied to 4 individual areas, each with a maximum of 16,000-24,000 square kilometers.

Intellectual Property

General Conditions

  • That the proposed artwork does not conflict with the provisions and principles of Islamic law and public morals.
  • The proposed artwork does not conflict with any local or international rights, regulations, or laws, or encourage in any way the violation of those rights, laws, or regulations.
  • The submission of the artwork by the participating artist does not imply its registration as an intellectual property.
  • The Ministry of Culture is to publish the information it deems appropriate for the participants, and everything related to the competition, on its website and its social media accounts.
  • The Ministry of Culture or the participating entities have the right to exclude any participating artist without giving any reasons, and without incurring the Ministry of Culture any obligations or compensation of any kind. The Ministry of Culture has the right not to award the prize to the main winner and to choose another participant as a winner when the reasons for the ineligibility of the participating artist to win are fulfilled by referring to the terms and conditions of the competition.
  • All decisions taken are final, and the Ministry of Culture or the participating parties have the right to suspend, delay, cancel or change the terms and conditions at any time and without prior notice.
  • The Ministry of Culture changes the terms and conditions from time to time, and accordingly, the participating artist must review any updates to these terms and conditions. Whereas the Ministry of Culture will not announce the changes it makes to these terms and conditions.

Conditions of Participation

  • The participating artist must be a Saudi artist. (The Saudi artist is a Saudi citizen working in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia or a Saudi national working outside the Kingdom.)
  • The participating artist must be over 18 years old.
  • The participating artist must be an individual.
  • The participating artist must only propose one artwork, according to the terms and conditions specified by the competition management policy.
  • The participating artist must submit his proposed artwork and all required documents via the platform, noting that all proposed artwork and required documents that have not been submitted via the platform will not be accepted or considered.
  • The Ministry of Culture or the participating entities will not be responsible for paying any fees to develop the design of the participating artist.

Technical Terms and Conditions

1) The applicant artist must submit new, original, and unique artwork submitted specifically for the Race Through Art Competition; it should not be part of a previous series.

2) The applicant artist must deal with topics that highlight the unique culture and history of Saudi Arabia as the host country.

3) The applicant artist must interact with the Formula 1 "We Race As One" initiative as described above.

4) The applicant artist must demonstrate creativity and originality in his submitted work.

5) The proposal must also include the following:

  • Artwork concept: written text with a maximum of 300 words describing the design, its importance, and how it meets the criteria for points 2 and 3 as shown above.
  • Supporting files: The participating artist must clarify how to design the artwork, drawings and sketches that show the artist and the design process in the form of supporting files. Any details, if any, can be added as a mockup design for the artwork on the ring.

Intellectual Property

  • All works submitted to the Ministry of Culture will become the property of the Ministry of Culture or the participating entities, and they or any of the entities participating in this competition are entitled to register their intellectual property.
  • In the event that there are two similar entries from two different people and there is no evidence of ownership of the idea at both parties, the competition policy will adopt the cancellation of both entries, except if one of the parties submits official proof of ownership.
  • The Ministry of Culture or the participating entities will keep the detailed files attached to the participation form in the competition or sent via e-mail.
  • The owners of the entries agree that the Ministry of Culture, the participating entities, or any authorized parties may publish these entries on the site or in any media, whether known now or emerging in the future, including websites, mobile, television, radio, etc., and the participant agrees to their use in promotional activities and advertisements.
  • Participation in all its details, as well as any other information submitted by the participating artist, must be personal and specifically entrusted to him. The participating artist declares that all information submitted does not violate intellectual property rights, private rights, privacy, or other rights of any third party.
  • The participant acknowledges his approval for the Ministry of Culture or the participating entities to photograph advertising campaigns, and to use the winning entries and the names of the winners in all available advertising media.
  • The Ministry of Culture or the participating entities do not bear any intellectual property rights claimed by the participant, and the Ministry of Culture does not bear any legal responsibility for the materials uploaded to the competition website which may constitute a violation of registered property rights.

Legal Responsibility

  • These terms and conditions are subject to the regulations applied in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the competent judicial authorities in the city of Riyadh consider any dispute that arises from participation in the competition.
  • The participating artist pledges the authenticity of the proposed participation, and that no one else owns the intellectual property rights to the participation.
  • In the event of a dispute about the intellectual property of the participation or any other dispute, the participating artist disclaims the Ministry of Culture or the participating entities from any responsibilities for any material or moral damages, and the participant alone bears full responsibility for the violation and breach issued by him.
  • The Ministry of Culture or the participating parties do not bear any responsibility if wrong or inaccurate information resulting from human errors or technical malfunctions such as loss, delay in data transfer, deletion, or malfunctions in the telephone line, computer, network, or computer accessories is provided.
  • The Ministry of Culture or the participating entities are not responsible for any material losses or damages resulting from participating in the competition.
  • The Ministry of Culture or the participating entities are not responsible for all legal procedures taken against those who violate any laws or regulations before the official authorities.

FAQ

- Can I enter if I do not live in Saudi Arabia?

Yes, the competition is open to Saudi artists anywhere in the world. All artists receive equal consideration.

- When is the deadline to submit my artwork proposal?

The deadline for submitting proposals will be 23 July 2021; any submissions after that date will not be accepted.

- Does it cost anything to enter?

No, signing up and submitting artwork is free.

- If more than one design is shared by one participant, is it possible to merge the design files for the different groups into one file?

It is not possible to merge files for several designs; the participant must upload files for one design group, and no more than one design is accepted.

- What language is used to present a summary of the artwork to the jury?

The summary of the works can be displayed in two languages: Arabic and English.
